Planning & Zoning Assistant

Job Summary:
Performs independent administrative tasks of substantial difficulty and assists with day-to-day operations of department. Works closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on planning and zoning related issues. Requires extensive knowledge of planning and zoning principles and practices. Must be able to read, understand and relay to the public by application of rules and regulations of the City of Zachary Unified Development Code (UDC).

Essential duties and responsibilities:
Answers incoming phone calls. Assists public with any department-related issues. Types letters, statements, as well as narrative and statistical reports. Prepares correspondence and recurring reports for supervisor’s signature. Arranges for meetings and conferences and may take notes. Maintains departmental files and records. Coordinates some office functions with other departments. Assists Department Director with coordination of daily operation of department. Assists Department Director with preparation of agenda and materials for all Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and any requests for information from Planning and Zoning Commission Members as requested. Performs other such duties as may be assigned by Department Director.

Qualifications/Education Required:
Associates degree or better in urban planning or related field or 2+ years of experience in planning and zoning regulations and applications.

Other Skills and Abilities Required:
Must be able to type 60 wpm. Good organizational and oral and written communication skills required. Must possess tact and diplomacy when interacting with the public. Must have extensive computer knowledge and be able to operate general office equipment such as multiple phone lines, fax machine, copier, etc. Must also possess basic knowledge of business English, spelling, and punctuation, office practices and procedures.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Frequent walking, occasional lifting and occasional crouching or stooping.
