Summary:
Assists Women & Children’s leadership in directing Nursing Practice according to evidence-based guidelines. Participates in providing clinical oversight and coordination of direct and indirect nursing care of patients on WCS units, ensuring the cohesive delivery of services, patient satisfaction and safety. Supervises nursing practice on WCS units to assure that nursing standard, OR standard, and quality initiatives are met with consistency in practice to establish reliability in patient experience and outcomes. Assists WCS leadership in assigning duties to professional and non-professional personnel based on patient’s needs, available staff, nursing skills and unit needs for optimal and consistent evidence-based nursing practice and patient safety. Assists in managing the orientation of all new personnel and responsible for all preceptor supervision, training and coordination to ensure nursing practice standards and quality initiatives are met. In collaboration with division leadership, plans and provides additional unit based education to improve / enhance consistent / evidence-based nursing practice of all staff based on unit needs. Assists division leadership in performing quality audits, incident follow-up and patient experience issues as needed and utilizes information to assist in improving nursing practice consistency and reliability in meeting quality measures. Provides detailed feedback to department leadership for staff work performance in terms of patient care, staff relations, efficiency of service, patient experience, preceptor abilities, and coaching needs to improve nursing practice and patient care delivery. Participates in Service Line management meetings and assists WCS leadership in strategic planning. Serves as clinical expert and liaison to IT department for EMR as it relates to nursing practice and documentation.

1. Previous Experience required: 5 years’ experience in department assigned or like department.
2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and possess current registration with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. BSN required.

Responsibilities:
- Plans, directs, and provides guidance and education in evidence-based nursing practice to WCS Unit Charge nurses, and unit staff.
A. Instructs unit personnel in new nursing techniques and procedures based on
acceptable evidence-based nursing practice guidelines.
B. Identify nursing practice educational needs of staff.
C. Maintains knowledge of new advances in clinical equipment and supplies
and assesses and evaluates the needs of the unit for practice improvement
with new evidence-based advances.
D. Assists WCS leadership in researching new evidence-based
technological and clinical developments and communicates acquired
information to leadership team to plan for appropriate / improved practice on
the WCS units.
E. Assists IT in identifying / planning / providing EMR practice guidance to staff as it relates to electronic documentation for consistency and reliability of care delivery, patient safety outcomes and positive patient experience.
F. Ensures nursing staff are informed of, understand and implement new or
revised patients services / policies & procedures that impact nursing
practice in the Women & Children’s setting to ensure compliance and
consistent / reliable care delivery.
G. Provides monthly education on fetal monitoring/interpretation to validate staff
competency.
H. Assists with annual GIFT education and re-certification.
I. Reviews existing protocols and patient outcomes to establish any needed policy/protocol changes to make in-line with best practice. Done in coordination with WCS Leadership team and any other ancillary specialties involved.
- Manages orientation program for WCS division and supervises orientation of new personnel to ensure optimal / consistent nursing practice on WCS units for reliable patient outcomes and experience.
A. Works with WCS leadership to establish and communicate preceptor
expectations / functions relating to mentoring of new personnel and assisting
new graduate nurses in establishing optimal / consistent nursing practices
for reliable and improved patient outcomes, safety and experience.
B. Identifies appropriate personnel to model nursing practice for new hires.
C. Evaluates / orientation / training program within established
frequency and collaborates with leadership to develop / advance the program.
3. Assists with leader rounding to ensure proper / consistent nursing care delivery in relationship to practice and outcomes, flow and function of the unit and nursing responsiveness, and to assist in improve the patient experience.
4. Assists WCS leadership with education, monitoring, compliance and documentation of all performance / core measures to assure consistent nursing practice and reliability of patient outcomes and experience.
5. Coordinates and conducts routine patient safety drills with staff to ensure all nursing practices include consistent and reliable response readiness:
A. Conducts mock codes / rapid response / hemorrhage/OR Fire/ Shoulder
Dystocia management drills in WCS as part of quarterly reviews for
quality, safety and performance measure compliance.
B. Evaluates staff knowledge and readiness of disaster / downtime
procedures.
6. Assists in quality audits, incident follow-up and patient experience issues as needed / directed and trends future practice changes needed for consistent / evidence-based nursing practice with reliable outcomes.
A. Participates in monthly perinatal collaboratives, coaching calls and webinars.
7. Acts as active member of the WCS Service Line Leadership team:
A. Keeps the Clinical Supervisor/Director informed of staff, patient, and
physician issues.
B. Promotes positive relationships with unit staff and ancillary departments
providing service to the department
C. Promotes satisfactory relationships among the unit staff, other
departments, the medical staff, and external.
D. Maintains confidentiality.
E. Channels suggestions, criticism, and questions to WCS leadership
F. Remains an active member of the Perinatal Initiatives Team.
G. Assists leadership with enforcement of professional behavioral standards
and job role responsibilities for care delivery team.
H. Assists in maintaining ongoing preparedness for inspections/surveys.
I. Maintains a positive attitude and promotes compliance with organizational and department goals at all times.
8. Assists with assignments as delegated by WCS management Team.
