Summary:
The Controlled Substance Technician assumes primary responsibility for controlled substance distribution, tracking, charging and record keeping. The Controlled Substance Technician does not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a Registered Pharmacist.

Responsibilities:
Prepares controlled substances for distribution to automated dispensing cabinets and other areas in which controlled substances are kept.Prepares controlled substances for verification by pharmacist prior to dispensing.Re-packages bulk, oral, solid and liquid controlled substances into unit-does containers.Replaces controlled substances in automated dispensing system according to dispensing records.Reviews and files controlled substance records and reports daily.Determines needs for controlled substances and relay that information to purchasing technician. Receives and documents receipt of controlled substances.Manages inventory levels of controlled substances in automated dispensing cabinets as determined by patient need.Organizes expired or overstocked controlled substances for return to appropriate vendors.Reviews controlled substance discrepancies and resolutions daily and educates staff as needed.Maintains controlled substance records as required by Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy and DEA.Reviews utilization and activity to identify diversion and assist Nursing administration in oversight of controlled substance audits.Restocks Controlled Substance stock boxes (e.g. CRNA boxes, CABG box, Endo box)Performs other duties and assignments as assigned and maintain the department in a neat, clean and orderly manner.Performs duties with an awareness of patient’s age, growth, development and cultural and spiritual differences.Provides prompt, courteous services to all internal and external customers. Prioritizes and addresses customer needs and demands in a professional manner, providing follow-up and developing cooperative relationships.Identifies opportunities and recommend methods to improve customer services, work processes and financial performance. Assists in design and implementation of quality improvement initiatives on departmental and organizational levels.Assists team members in completion of task and assignments to ensure continuity of service. Orient new co-workers and actively support team development.Follows North Oaks Health System's compliance programs and all federal and state regulatory guidelines.Is able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
