Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is an independent healthcare provider who, working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team, is responsible for providing comprehensive hematology and oncology care to patients. The Advanced practice provider educates patients and/or their families to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute and chronic illness. The advanced practice provider seeks opportunities for professional growth through participation in continuing education, staff development and hospital committees.

 

Other information:

1. Previous Experience Required:

· Previous Experience required – Experience in an Oncology or Infusion setting preferred.

· Must be credentialed and approved for privileges through the established Medical Staff Committees initially and on an ongoing basis.

2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:

Licensed in the State of Louisiana as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

3. Must have active DEA license within six months of hire. As of April 2014 job description revision, existing employees will have nine months to obtain a DEA license. Maintenance of DEA license is required.

    Responsibilities:

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

    1. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessment of patients/families with acute or chronic health problems which may include the psychosocial, cognitive and personal assessments and limitations of the patient/family to meet the patient care goals.

    2. Establishes medical diagnoses; orders and evaluates diagnostic studies; performs and monitors therapeutic procedures; assesses and/or recommends follow-up plans.

    3. Records and documents health appraisal data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services and care.

    4. Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships and interpersonal interactions.

    5. Acts as a resource to healthcare staff and implements educational programs to improve management of patients/families.

    6. Develops, conducts and/or evaluates formal or informal in-service and continuing education programs in areas of expertise.

    7. Maintains and enhances a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well as continuing education requirements necessary for licensure.

    8. Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Program and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.

    9. Performs approved procedures competently.

    10. Documents in the medical record according to policy.

    11. Assist with call/beeper management.

    12. Assist with hospital rounding and clinic patient management.

    13. Maintains a working knowledge of treatment options as recommended by the NCCN and other hematology/oncology guidelines.
