Summary:

Provide direct and indirect patient care within any clinical area under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse in accordance with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.  

Provide one-on-one observation of selected patients for the purpose of maintaining patient safety.

The Nurse Tech I will be assigned to patients by a Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Designee.

A. Experience, Knowledge and Skill

1.Previous Experience Required:

The nursing student must demonstrate good standing in an accredited professional school of nursing. Students must have completed a successful clinical rotation within a hospital setting with competent demonstration of appropriate clinical skills.

2.Specialized or Technical Education Required:

a. Enrollment in an accredited Registered Nursing program and completion of first clinical rotation required

OR

b. Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.


3.Manual or Physical Skill Required:

Good mental health to work effectively with patients, families, physicians and other personnel. Visual, auditory and musculoskeletal functions sufficient to provide safe patient care.

4.Physical Effort Required:

Must have good physical health, capable of standing on feet for long periods of time, moving and lifting patients.

Responsibilities:

1.Assists the nurse with the plan of care for assigned patients.

a.Receives bedside report on assigned patients.

b.Confers with nurse on plan of care for the assigned shift.

c.Monitors vital signs as outlined in the plan of care and reports deviations from normal values.

d.Performs/assists the patient in completion of personal hygiene including baths, perineal care, skin care, grooming, oral hygiene, toileting and other ADLs as directed.

e.Performs indwelling catheter care

f.Collects input and output data as directed.

g.Obtains accurate weights.

h.Delivers meals to patient’s room after confirming ordered diet. Serves patient meals and assists with feeding as needed.

i.Changes patient linens daily and as needed.

j.Rounds every 2 hours per care around the clock protocol.

k.Performs/assists patient with transfers, lifting, turning and positioning and ambulation.

l.Performs Chlorhexidine bathing pre and post procedure per protocols.

m.Applies and assists nursing in monitoring SCD devices.

n.Applies TED hose after RN accurately sizes.

o.Demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job duties.

p.Demonstrates and assists the registered nurse with safety precautions – seizure precautions, aspiration precautions, suicide precautions, fall prevention, quick release of restraints, rapid response/Code Blue protocols.

q.Perform Accuchecks (one step glucometer checks after glucometer training).

r.Performs point of care testing specific to unit.

2.Assists with supply/equipment management.

a.Pickup and deliver supplies as needed.

b.Account for supplies used by using the PAR system.

c.Utilizes department specific equipment including vital sign machines, SCDs, wheelchairs, bed operation (scale, alarms, air pump attachments).


3.Assists in the maintenance of a healthful and safe environment.

a.Keeps unit tidy and clean.

b.Returns equipment to storage when not in use.

c.Disinfects patient equipment per hospital protocol.

d.Reports broken equipment and removes from service immediately.

e.Complies with Avasys requirements.

f.Complies with fall prevention protocols.

g.Knowledge of all hospital safety codes and performs duties during both drills and actual emergencies.

h.Report unsafe conditions and incidents.

4.Maintain satisfactory communications.

a.Demonstrate clear and accurate lines of communications.

b.Demonstrate listening and understanding with verbal and non-verbal responses.

c.Demonstrate accuracy in verbal communication.

d.Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital.

e.Extend courtesy and consideration for others in interpersonal and interdepartmental

relationships.

f.Offer assistance and/or instructions to patients, physicians, families and co-workers in

a courteous and attentive manner.

5.Participate in educational programs.

a.Attend in-service programs as provided.

b.Attend staff meetings in accordance with policy.

c.Complete computer based learning (CBL) modules as assigned.

6.Maintain an employment record in accordance with Hospital policies.

a.Demonstrate a professional manner in work setting and adhere to the 4c’s.

b.Comply with attendance policies.

c.Adhere to acceptable dress code.

d.Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Program and Federal and State

Regulatory guidelines regarding hospital information.

7.EPIC Documentation – Document care when care is rendered.

8.Perform other duties as required.
