Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technologist participates as a member of the surgical team under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Certified Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room will be a graduate of an accredited school for surgical technologists and must be certified as a surgical technologist in the state of Louisiana. Previous experience preferred.

Responsibilities:
I.Acts as a scrub nurse during the operative procedure.A.Pre procedure1Prepares for the surgical procedure by reviewing physician pick list and preference cards2Sets up surgical equipment required for the procedure.3Selects appropriate sterile supplies as listed on the physician profile.4Understands and applies principles of sterilization when operating auto clave. Understands and applies principles of sterilization when operating auto clave. 5Sets up table, instruments and supplies at the appropriate time according to established protocol.6Counts instruments, sponges and needles with the circulating nurse.7Assist with maintenance of accurate pick list and preference cards.Procedure1Understands and applies principles of aseptic technique.2Demonstrates integrity in aseptic technique.3Scrubs, dons gown and gloves in accordance with established policies and procedures.4Maintains the sterile field by monitoring the sterility of all supplies used during the operative procedure.5Performs pre-op skin prep using sterile technique.6Complies with AORN standards on confinement and containment.7Assess and anticipate the surgeon’s needs for exposure and selects appropriate method. May not aid in exposure by cutting tissue or performing blunt dissection.8Assist in preparation, positioning and draping of patient and operative area according to need.9Demonstrates methods of tissue handling that promote tissue preservation and wound healing.10Provides appropriate retraction with protection of anatomical structures.11Utilizes appropriate suctioning techniques to maintain a dry field.12Provides adequate exposure by appropriate sponging techniques.13Utilizes sponges/laps appropriately for pressure and hemostasis. May not control blood flow, prevent hemorrhage (cauterizing bleeder) but may apply ESU to hemostat with physician direction.14Operates tables, lights, suction equipment, ESU and other diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.15Passes instruments during surgery, recognizing and interpreting the immediate situation to anticipate surgeon needs.16Prepares and manages medications and solutions at the operative field.17Assists in closing of body planes and skin. May cut suture. May not apply or tie suture. May apply staples after skin approximated by the surgeon.18Assists in application of casts and splints.19Counts instruments, sponges, etc. as established by policy when relieved during a case.20Prepares specimens as directed by the surgeon and according to policy for delivery to the lab.Post Procedure1Remove used instruments and supplies from the OR.2Disposes of hazardous items per established protocols.3Cleans instruments and returns to Sterile Processing per established protocols.4Communicates any change regarding physician preferences to the service specific team leader.5Report any stated physician concerns to Unit Coordinator.D.Functions as a Sterile Processing Technician1. Practices and understands universal precautions in the Receiving of contaminated equipment in the decontamination area of the department. Dons gown, gloves, mask and safety eyewear in accordance with established policy and procedure. Decontaminates all equipment.2. Demonstrates working knowledge of all decontaminating and sterilization equipment.3. Maintains proper workflow patterns.4. Properly inspects, assembles, wraps/containerizes and processes all instruments/equipment. Monitors and documents processing equipment functions.5. Has expanded knowledge of all surgical instrumentation.6. Responsible for maintaining all general and medical supplies in Sterile Services Department.7. Responsible for maintaining adequate sterile stock levels in OR. Maintains a safe and clean environment by keeping work areas clean and neat at all times.8. Monitors the sterility of all supplies in Sterile Services and in the OR.9. Assists in the care and handling of professional supplies. Is aware of the need for special handling or surgical instruments and supplies.10. Monitors all sterilization equipment in the operating room.11. Demonstrates working knowledge of OSHA and AAMI standards with regards to the safe use of ethylene oxide, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide plasma, and the handling of bio-hazardous waste.12. Actively participates in the orientation of new employees.13. Participates intra-departmentally in the Quality Improvement process.14. Precepts Operating Room personnel in the learning of instrumentation identification.15. Precepts Operating Room personnel in the teaching of decontamination with sterilization procedures.II.Maintains a safe environment by following established OR protocols.A.Removes equipment not working properly from the immediate work environment and reports to coordinator and Biomed.B.Reports any non-functioning supplies during a procedure to Risk Management.
