The Patient Care Tech will be a high school graduate or have a diploma from an equivalent program. The Patient Care Tech will have certified nursing assistant training, EMT training, military corpsman training or medical assistant training or be enrolled in an accredited school of nursing with documented skills equivalent to a certified nursing assistant.

Responsibilities:
The Patient Care Tech has three main areas of responsibility:(1) Clerical or Unit Secretary Duties.(2) Direct patient care.(3) Assisting the nursing staff with patient data collection. The Patient Care Technician is assigned specific responsibilities by the Unit Coordinator or Charge Nurse on duty. The Patient Care Technician may be assigned to one specific task or may rotate assignments during their shift. The Patient Care Tech performs all duties, which may include phlebotomy, for those who have successfully met the requirements of basic phlebotomy established by the Laboratory Director.Patient Care Technician Clerical I. Responsible for the clerical duties of the unit as well as maintaining patient records and unit supplies.A. Maintain established levels of inventory.B. Greet persons presenting to the nurses station in a courteous and friendly manner.C. Preserve department confidentiality of all patients.D. Answers the telephone and utilizes the established phones courtesy protocol.E. Answers the nurse call system and utilizes the computer and fax machine correctly.F. Notifies the appropriate departments of physician orders and upholds interdepartmental relations.G. Communicates messages and questions to appropriate staff.H. Organizes and preserves the patient’s medical record.II. Patient Data Collection Function:Assists the registered nurse assigned to admitting new patients to the unit or reassessing previouslyadmitted patients as directed. The Patient Care Tech’s role is to promote optimal patient flow through the unit’s unique health care delivery system (Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, Same Day Surgery, or other applicable areas).A. Facilitates clear communication between the assessment area/or triage area and the charge nurse.1. Patient arrival.2. Patient location.3. Family members waiting with the patient.B. Obtain and documents complete vital signs of patients both pre-op and post-op.C. Communicates vital signs information with the admitting/triage nurse.D. May provide basic first aid under the supervision of a licensed nurse.E. Assist the patient to their assigned room and help with undressing and gowning.F. May utilize/assist with the application and removal of non-invasive monitoring equipment.1. Cardiac Monitor2. Pulse Oximeter3. Non-invasive blood pressure monitor4. Nasal 02G. Assists with the restocking of supplies.III. Direct Patient Care Function:To facilitate the evaluation, treatment and final disposition of the patient through the health care system. To assist the nurse assigned to direct patient care.A. Assist with the collection of specimens and transport in accordance with the universal precaution policy.B. Set up patients for examinations and procedures.C. Vital signs.D. Wound cleaning.E. Assist with aseptic and sterile dressing application.F. Basic first aid.G. Stock and maintain supplies dressing application.H. Assist with cleaning the patient treatment area after the patient is discharged.I. Perform phlebotomy for patients requiring serum testing.J. Perform 12 lead EKG and rhythm strips as ordered by the attending physician.K. Perform Glucometer checks.IV. Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Programs and all Federal and State regulatory guidelines.V. Is able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
