Summary:
Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health care services as delegated by the orthopedic surgeon and within the Mid-Level’s scope of practice, competencies and privileges granted by North Oaks. Work as a member of the orthopedic healthcare team, assisting the supervising physician in seeing and treating patients in clinic and hospital settings, including the operating room.

1. Previous experience in an orthopedic practice preferred; orthopedic surgery related experience preferred; BLS required;2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:For Physician Assistant: High school diploma or equivalent; Master’s degree, baccalaureate degree or a minimum of two years of college credits; Graduate from CAAHEP-approved program; Current NCCPA certification; Hold a current Louisiana Physician Assistant license in the state of Louisiana and comply with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning the practice of Physician Assistants.For Nurse Practitioner: High school diploma or equivalent; Successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner master's degree in a nursing program in the applicant's specialty area or demonstration of successful completion a formal postgraduate Nurse Practitioner track or program (within the applicant's specialty area) within a school of nursing granting graduate-level academic credit (e.g., graduate, nonmatriculating program). Hold a current state license as advanced practice nurse in the state of Louisiana, and comply with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning the advanced practice of nursing3. Must have active DEA license within in six months of hire. As of April 2014 job revision, existing employees will have six months to obtain a DEA license. Maintenance of DEA license is required.4. Manual or Physical Skill Required:Must be capable of assisting with the lifting and moving of patients. Must have a thorough knowledge of body mechanics. Must be capable of prolonged standing and walking. Must have no physical or mental health problem that prevents exercising privileges granted.5. Responsibilities:
To the extent delegated by the supervising physician and within Mid-Level’s scope of practice (as defined by applicable accrediting organizations and applicable law), competencies and privileges granted by North Oaks, job duties may include:1. Obtain patient histories and perform physical examinations;2. Dictate history and physical examination results;3. Write orders for appropriate treatments and tests, counter-signed by the supervising physician, in accordance with clinical practice guidelines and/or protocols. Such orders may include:a) diagnostic proceduresb) laboratory tests;4. Formulate treatment plans and implement therapeutic intervention5. Exercise judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral or evaluation by the supervising physician6. Monitor the effectiveness of interventions;7. Perform and assist with procedures within scope of practice. The following list includes most common but is not all inclusive:· Suture wounds; Removal of sutures, staples and casts;· Inject local anesthetic agents subcutaneously;· tendon repair, wound closure and management· incision and drainage· needle biopsy,· percutaneous pinning of fractures k-wire and hardware removal;· aspirations and injections of joints, bursars and cysts· closed reductions of fractures and dislocations· apply braces, casts, splints and other orthopedic appliances8. Offer counseling and education on health status, test results, disease processes, and discharge planning;9. Make appropriate referrals;10. Order, dispense, prescribe and administer medications and medical devices;11. Assist in the Operating Room as delegated by the supervising orthopedic surgeon within scope of practice;12. Provide pre- and post-operative surgical care;13. Conduct or assist with patient rounds, developing and implementing patient management plans, recording progress notes, and providing continuity of care;14. Interpret and correlate subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis;15. Assist in call rotation and Emergency Department rounds;16. Evaluate, screen and council patient on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance;17. At all times comply with North Oaks Medical Staff Bylaws;18. Complete all ongoing education required to maintain North Oaks privileges and required certifications as governed by certification authority and/or the State Board of Medical Examiners or LSBN;19. Communicate following appropriate channel of communication.20. Follow any other job related instructions and perform any other job related duties as requested by clinic management;21. Consistently attend meetings as assigned, including monthly staff meetings;22. Follow North Oaks Health System’s compliance programs and federal and state regulatory guidelines;
