Staff Attorney - Family Law/ Domestic Violence, Gretna
SLLS is a non-profit law firm serving the 22 parishes east of the Atchafalaya basin. We provide free civil legal aid to low-income households. Our attorneys serve this region from offices in Baton Rouge, Covington, Gretna, Hammond, Houma, and New Orleans.
SLLS is currently looking for:
FAMILY LAW/ DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STAFF ATTORNEY in the Gretna Office
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provides legal services to individual clients and community groups.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Staff Attorneys are under the supervision of the Managing Attorney assigned to them.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Staff Attorneys supervise the support staff on work the attorney assigns to them, and as delegated by the Managing Attorney.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Handles a caseload commensurate with experience, size and complexity of cases and other relevant factors. Handles assigned cases.
- Performs intake as assigned. Backs up the person performing intake and answers that person’s questions when on duty. Performs outreach intake as assigned.
- Establishes contact with social services and regulatory agencies for the exchange of relevant information. Develops a referral network.
- Keeps abreast of latest developments in all areas of DomesticViolenceand Family Law, with particular emphasis on those areas which involve assigned cases, and with emphasis on developing new substantive and procedural skills. Maintains familiarity and complies with the Rules of Professional Conduct of the Louisiana State Bar Association and related case law.
- Consults with supervisor about cases and cooperates with supervision of casework and prepares Quarterly Case Status Reports.
- Complies with the Advocacy Manual standards in all aspects.
- Maintains a personal tickler sys and participates in the office tickler system.
- Maintains client confidentiality.
- Learns and applies necessary computer skills for performing work including but not limited to:
- checks email at least once daily and communicates by email.
- performs word processing work.
- retrieves and updates client database records as needed.
- Works closely with the secretary assigned to him/her to develop effective syss for assisting clients. Supervises the secretary to make sure that assigned work is done correctly and in a professional manner, and complies with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Maintains positive relations with private bar, judiciary, court personnel, other agencies and community organizations, as well as other staff members.
- Complies with office procedures and LSC and other funders regulations, in particular, keeps records on the computer of how work time is spent as required by LSC regulations.
- Perform any other duties deemed necessary to accomplish the goals of SLLS, as directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school
Member of the Louisiana bar or willing to take the first available exam.
Effective written and oral communication skills, advocacy skills and research skills.
Effective organizational skills, and effective computer skills.
Demonstrated ability to meet job expectations without close supervision.
Professional, courteous and concerned about clients.
Staff Attorney positions must be licensed to practice law in Louisiana or pending exam results with admission to the Louisiana Bar. The starting salary for a full-time staff attorney is $54,563, which increases depending on experience. The salary range for this staff attorney position is $54,563 – $90,563, with a maximum starting salary of $81,563. Bilingualism is a plus that receives extra compensation. SLLS does reimburse moving expenses.
