The Assistant Director for Tulane University’s Upward Bound Program is a full-time position responsible for assisting the Director in overseeing program operations and compliance of the Upward Bound Program, including academic and summer components. This position supports and manages other staff members in designing and implementing key college and career readiness programming, as according to the federal regulations. In addition, they ensure high-quality individual academic supports, ensure post-secondary acceptance and graduation. This position plays a central role in academic coaching, general advising, personal growth, leadership development, and training to high school students participating in the program. In addition, they will develop and oversee program evaluation. The Upward Bound Program is operated under a federal grant that currently stands at $2.57 million per grant cycle. The Assistant Director will support the Director in ensuring federal budget guidelines are met. The Upward Bound Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is a college prep program that focuses on college completion for first generation and low-income students. The program seeks to address the needs of these students and to increase the rates of post-secondary acceptance, enrollment, and graduation. Upward Bound’s evidence-based model consist of instrumental academic support services, including weekly academic classes, tutoring, and mentoring, ACT test preparation, individual counseling, social and emotional learning, financial aid workshops for students and their parents, college prep seminar, and scholarship workshops, college tours, career exploration events, financial literacy, and internships. In addition, a six-week summer component reinforces the work. Students commit to the program for four years in high school and receive support during their post-secondary years. The Upward Bound Program is a part of the College and Career Success Team at the Cowen Institute at Tulane University. The mission of the Cowen Institute is to advance public education and youth success in New Orleans and beyond.
