The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will focus on providing basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers in the NICU and to high-risk mothers referred by Maternal Fetal Medicine via virtual or home visits as needed. The BPC will also provide information about the benefits of breastfeeding and the provision of breast milk to high-risk infants, overcoming common barriers to breast feeding and breast milk initiation, production and sustained supply of breast milk, as well as preventing and providing intervention and support for common breastfeeding and breast milk production concerns. The BPC will assist with data collection for sustainability efforts and assist with Tulane Milk Truck Operations including data collection for the Express Yourself Quality improvement collaborative, external community outreach and education events, on-line webinars, milk truck deliveries, and other activities focused on enhancing breast feeding and breast milk provision locally and that impact existing disparities in breast feeding. The BPC will also assist in projects related to breastfeeding and the Tulane Milk Truck as well as provide support to other pediatric research as needed.
